Family Friends is a unique program that matches adult volunteers one-on-one with children who have disabilities and their families. The volunteers are caring, positive individuals who offer love and companionship to the child by spending a few hours a week in the family’s home. They may read a book, tell stories, or work on a project, craft or homework while having fun! The child flourishes with having an additional loving presence in his life and treasured friendships are born.
The entire family benefits from the Family Friends Program. Parents are given a chance to spend time with another sibling, catch up on household chores, or just have a few precious minutes to themselves. Siblings are often included in the activities, and sometimes it is the siblings who need a little extra TLC. The volunteer will listen to a concerned parent, offering encouragement, support and friendship, often becoming an extended family member. The Volunteer may also help with resource information.
The volunteer benefits knowing he/she is helping a family by just having fun and being a good, caring friend. It’s that simple!
Together we are making a difference in the lives of children with disabilities … One family at a time!
